Walk Series – Week 20 (Ephesians 5:8-14)
Intro: The worthy walk series continues, we start off the new year by simply asking are you in the light or are you still living in the dark? Simple question hard to answer, WHY! No sarcasm intended; however, it is very hard to walk without legs, without any form of prosthetics or a wheel chair, or crutches…? It’s pretty much impossible. Interestingly enough there are people in the church wondering why they’re not walking. It is impossible to have a walk without a relationship with Jesus Christ. You must see that or your still in the dark. Two walks through life are available to mankind. There is the life and walk of darkness or the life and walk of light. There is a world of difference between the two. In fact, a person's eternity is determined by which life and walk they pursue.
- Which life are you pursuing – Let’s start the New Year with a serious desire to live the life in the walk of light.
Text: Ephesians 5:8-14 (NKJV)
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. 14 Therefore He says: "Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light."
- To have this serious desire to live the life in the walk of light you must understand what light does:
1. Light Bears Things: vs. 8-9
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.”
The believer is to walk as a child of light, light, not darkness, is the nature of the believer, light bears the things of life, the fruit of the Spirit. A person who does not know God is in darkness; they do not know where they have come from. They do not know why they’re on this earth—not really. They arise in the morning, go about their daily affairs, and retire at night. Arise the next morning, goes about their daily affairs, and retires at night. Arises the next morning, and on and on. Where they are heading and why they’re here—the inner core of life—is all a mystery. The real purpose, meaning, and significance of life are not understood—not really. They live in darkness as to why they and everyone else are really on earth. The thought often presence itself; Is there really a God or not, a heaven or not? How can they know and be absolutely sure? They’re in the darkness about the future, that inevitable day of death and eternity that rushes ever so rapidly toward every one of us.
This is what is meant about a person being in darkness, about their being the very embodiment of darkness. Their wrapped up in darkness: past, present, and future. Apart from God, no man knows the truth: no man knows where they have come from, why they’re here, or where there going. This person’s whole life is shadowed and covered, invaded and filled with darkness. They’re not walking as light; their walking as darkness. “Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." John 8:12
Light bears all good things—the fruit of the Spirit. A life that illuminates light will give off three things in particular.
Righteousness means both to be right and to do right. There are those who stress being righteous and neglect doing righteousness. This can lead to false security and loose living. Believing in Jesus Christ and neglecting His righteousness doesn’t stick. The Bible knows nothing about being righteous without living righteously.
Yes the truth will set you free or in this reference give sight to the blind. Moral truth, saving truth, working truth, living truth. It is not simply something to be known; it is something to be done: “Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.” John 8:31
Jesus Christ is the Living Truth He is the Word: He the truth sets you free from the shadow of doubt and despair. He the truth sets you free from the bondages of sin. He the truth sets you free from the bondage of death. He the truth sets you free from the bondage of judgment and hell. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
- To have this serious desire to live the life in the walk of light you must next understand what shows:
2. Light Shows Things: Vs. 10-12
“Finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret.”
Light shows what is acceptable and exposes the works of darkness. Everything the believer does is to be "unto the Lord"; that is, setting your attention and energy upon pleasing the Lord. This will be a struggle for the believer to get under control, but we must show this joy, why? Because the Lord loved and gave Himself for us; therefore, the believer is to love and give himself to please the Lord.
Light exposes the works of darkness. The charge is clear and forceful: believers are to have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness. “Now this is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in Him. 6 If we say, “We have fellowship with Him,” yet we walk in darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:5-7 (HCSB)
- Finally to have this serious desire to live the life in the walk of light you must understand light awakens:
3. Light Awakens Things: vs. 13-14
“But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. 14 Therefore He says: "Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light."
Light reveals and converts everything it touches, it awakens the sleeping. Deadness doesn’t walk in the light. When light touches something it becomes light. It is lit up and to some degree the object gives off light itself. It is converted and changed. When the light of Jesus Christ touches the life of a person in darkness, that life is changed: it becomes light. The darkness is done away with and eliminated. That person begins to touch the lives of those in darkness who surround him. (Discipleship)
So long as evil is done in secret it thrives, but when it is dragged out of the dark corners and closed rooms into the light, it dies. When a person confronts Christ, their dark works are exposed in all their hurt, damage, filth, and corruption. We must always remember, this is the very reason many refuse to confront Christ. “For everyone who practices wicked things hates the light and avoids it, so that his deeds may not be exposed.” John 3:20 (HCSB)
Just as the rays of sunlight warm and help recover a damp and cloudy day, the light of Jesus Christ is just like the rays of the sun. The light of Jesus Christ not only illuminates and reveals, it also cleanses. The light of Jesus Christ is not only a revealing and condemning thing; it is a healing thing as well. Light awakens the sleeping, those who are spiritually dead. Most people in the world are as sleeping men when it comes to walking in the light of God. A zombie (sleepwalker) they are living in the darkness of spiritual sleep and spiritual death—ever rushing on to that inevitable day of eternal darkness and death. Sad thing with this text, it is written to believers. Too many professing believers are passing through life just like unbelievers: asleep—living in the darkness of spiritual sleep and spiritual death—fellowshipping with and too often participating in the works of darkness. They are unaware and ignorant of the great heritage and promises God has given us in Christ Jesus. “Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame.” 1 Corinthians 15:34
“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." John 8:12
Awake, Arise and Live!
“I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.” John 12:46 I SEE THE LIGHT, DO YOU?
