Text: John 19:21-27 (NKJV)

21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but, 'He said, "I am the King of the Jews." ' "22 Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written." 23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be," that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: "They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots." Therefore the soldiers did these things. 25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!" 27 Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.”

“And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23 (ESV)

Intro: I can’t take credit for the title of this message; Bob gave it to me, a resident of Spring Arbor, (Thanks Bob). Who is the greatest woman? Is it Marry the mother of Jesus, how about sister Teresa, could it be one of the two Missionaries we recognize each year; Annie Armstrong, or Lottie moon. I am going to introduce to you today, here at Ocean View Baptist Church the greatest woman in the world! (Do you know who it is? Can you guess?) That’s right it is you! You are the greatest woman in the world.

I sent my wife the sermon info for the bulletin, and her comment was: “You didn’t have to write about me!!” Actually gentleman your wife is the greatest woman in the world and you should treat her like she is! Actually sons and daughters you mother is the greatest woman in the entire world. Application: Through Jesus you can be the greatest mother!

1. This Mother was Devoted:

The example of Jesus can once again show what true devotion is all about. Look at the care Jesus had for His mother, His thoughts were on others, not on himself, every fiber of His being existed for others, not for Himself. Even in death, His mind and being were set on taking care of others. This is often the devoted mothers thought’ with her children. Mary was so devoted to her son, she would do whatever it took.

We admire Mary's devotion in coming to the cross: “Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, "Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against. 35 yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed." Luke 2:34-35

2. This Mother Sacrificed:

Many didn’t love Mary’s child, you could say he was a trouble maker in the eyes of others. We here people make the remark all the time how only a mother could love this child like this.

Mary was at the cross. We have all been told or taught that Mary was at the cross when her son was crucified. What were not told, or have not given much thought too, is the danger she placed herself in. Mary was at great risk. Mary’s son was a heretic in the eyes of others and this loving mother didn’t care what others thought. “You have heard people say the devil has spawned in this child.”

Any supporter of Jesus who stood at the cross ran the risk of ridicule and arrest. Nevertheless, Mary stood there. Why? She loved Him. There is no other explanation: she simply loved Him. He had done so much for her that she was willing to stand by Him no matter the cost.

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” John 14:27 (KJV)

“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (KJV)

3. This Mother loved:

Jesus left a good example on how to love. He cared for His mother. The fifth event of the cross was Jesus’ great love for His mother. Jesus Was Not So Heavenly-Minded That He Was No Earthly Good, only the disciple whom Jesus loved records this word of Jesus to His mother. He had the power to come down from the cross for the sake of His mother that she should not be left alone. He practiced what He preached, putting God's kingdom first. “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33

God, in His providence, made provision through John to take care of His mother. It can become frustrating and almost too much to bear when we have to face death with a loved one, but God does provide, He will not leave us alone.

4. This mother was blessed:

But she was a sinner who exalted God her Savior. She referred to herself as a humble bond slave to God, who needed mercy.

Luke 1:41-48 “And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. 45 Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord." 46 And Mary said: "My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. 48 For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.”

She was blessed because she believed. This is the qualification for the greatest mother! Mary was a woman of singular virtue, or she would never have been chosen to be the mother of the Lord Jesus Christ. For that role she deserves respect and honor.

Conclusion: Are you a weary Mother?

Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, calling for you and for me. Ye who are weary come home!

Hebrews 12:1-2, 12-17

“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 12 Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed. 14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; 16 lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.”

Who is the greatest mother? A devoted mother, a mother willing to sacrifice. A mother who loves, and this mother is blessed!

That’s the greatest woman in the world!
